Feeding the input and then measuring the output to make sure that the client's requirements are met is the right approach towards functional testing. The end product is checked against the specifications laid down by the client.

Functional testing comes under quality assurance process. It is one of the type of black box testing. Functions are tested by giving them input and examining the output.
It has many types like smoke test,regression testing,sanity testing etc.

Functional testing means testing the application against business requirements. Functional testing is executed using the functional specifications given by the client or by the design specifications according to use cases given by the design team. Role of functional testing is to validating the behavior of an application.

Functional testing is a type of black box testing that bases its test cases on the specifications of the software component under test. Functions are tested by feeding them input and examining the output, and internal program structure is rarely considered (Not like in white-box testing).
Functional testing differs from system testing in that functional testing "verify a program by checking it against ... design document or specification while system testing validate a program by checking it against the published user or system requirements
