Is Cloud-Based Software Testing Necessary?
Bangalore: Over the past few years, Cloud has evolved as a buzz word in most of the IT industries. Testing in the cloud has greatly reduced the cost involved especially for mobile applications. Cloud manifests itself in three forms viz. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). However, Software-as-a-Service and Infrastructure-as-a-Service has recently emerged as the most important software testing services.
Jamie Yap in zdnet.com explains that Cloud-based software testing is good but at the same time unnecessary.
Although cloud-based testing services has brought down the cost of application testing, however, the IT industries are not sure whether the data stored in the cloud are safe or not. Another major issue that many companies are facing is whether the systems can inter-operate with each other.
Chandranshu Singh stated that the amount of testing that software companies have to carry out is increasing exponentially. Furthermore, he pointed out that cloud based software testing tools bring down the overall cost of testing thus there’s better utilization of the infrastructure.
Cloud- based testing services remove the need to build the required infrastructure for peak load simulation, thus, not only making testing simple but also cost effective added Jeff Findlay, Item Architect, Asia-Pacific and Japan, Micro Focus.
However, it is being observed by specialists that cloud based testing at the moment is not yet a necessity. Software testing teams should find the right equilibrium between automated and manual testing according to Singh. Another major issue that plagues the software testing industry is the interoperability of the cloud systems. If the need arises, the migration to a different cloud platform should be smooth and this can be achieved only by selecting the right vendor.
However, for companies building mobile applications, it is important to exploit the capabilities of cloud testing services as the platforms and the systems are important considerations.
