IISc gears up to counter the 'bug' threat

Telecom minister Kapil Sibal recently announced at a press conference held in New Delhi that a new laboratory would be set up, at a cost of 60 crore inr
The laboratory is being set up to test and certify telecommunications equipment used by telecom operators in India.
The motive behind this proposal is to keep the country's telecom network safe and free from any malwares or security bugs.
This lab, is being touted to be the answer to the threats of enemy countries planting bugs to make our telecom system dysfunctional.
In order to establish its purpose, the test centre all telecom equipment suppliers to Indian telecom companies will be asked to provide source code and to share internal details of their telecom equipment like detailed design document and internal architecture which are vital for detailed testing.
The IISc has already initiated the process with Huawei of China and simultaneously contacted other major suppliers like Cisco and Juniper regarding this.
Speaking on this issue in New Delhi at a press conference , telecom minister Kapil Sibal said: "The proposed centre would formulate standards and policies as well as provide facilities for testing, validation and security certification for various network elements, in a bid to make networks secure and less vulnerable from internal and external threats"
