Bangalore: The recent days has seen developers trying to secure a position as a tester. Many developers look at testing as a ‘transitional’ job. This has proved beneficial, as a bad tester can damage less when compared to a bad programmer.

The primary task of a tester is to find bugs and defects in software. Once found, they need to fix the problem and document it for future reference. Here are few tips to hire a good tester.

1.    Introduce Defect/Bugs
You can introduce bugs in places where they don’t usually occur and ask the tester to find them. Here you can check if the tester has the ability to understand the relationship between codes and quality.

2.    Include an Incomplete Test Suite
Bugs and defects are more prominent in parts of the software which has not been tested. Using an incomplete automated test suite, you can check the ability of the tester to identify the parts that has not been tested.

3.    Ability to Bridge the Communication Gap
A tester’s task is not only to find bugs and rectify errors. However, they should also be able to bridge the communication gap with the customers to understand their needs. One way to check the candidate’s ability to bridge the gap is to bring in a non-technical customer. The task of the candidate is to explain how the software should work and support their explanation with examples and test cases.

4.    Good Programming Skills
These days, testers also need to have programming skills with emphasis on automated testing. You can ask the tester to write codes to not only check their test automation skills but also their ability to write clean codes.

5.    Team Work
Team work is the driving force behind the success of a team. While hiring testers ensure that they can work and cooperate well with the team to ensure success at the end.
