Changes in the industry
I joined SQS as a test engineer in 2010.Testing has been growing rapidly with new tools and technology. We started working with QTP 10 & we came accross various new functionalities, when we moved on to QTP 11.Additional tool support and enhanced capabilities of Tool provide flexibilty for Automation
Areas for the Future
Testing is context dependant process.
If Manual testing is your choice, then you must be aware of Unix commands and Environment setup. For Automation ,you need to have good knowledge of at least one Automation tools.Automation Tools like QTP,selenuim,VSTP are having bright carrer scope.
Points of inflection
The recession started in 2008,has a great impact on IT industry.Very less job opportunities were available in the market especially for a fresher.I remember a walkin drive at Capegemini,Pune at Talwade. On that day there were almost 3000 to 4000 candidates, appear for a aptitude test !
Current and Previous Responsibilities
I am working on Siemens PLM project as a Test Engineer.
I started my career in functional testing.I Worked on Writing Test scripts,Validating and reporting defects and developement and maintenance of test cases for build to build changes.
Larry Page and Sergy are my role models.
I was very inspired when I read the book :the history of google.
Larry says :Google is not coventional company. The book also describes the downfalls for the google and the several challeges company met successfully.
Degrees that Matter
Certifications are always helpful to get a good career hike.Nowadays most Companies prefer certified professionals.ISTQB certification (Foundation level) is highly recommended and useful for those who want to make their career in Manual tesing.
The Journey So Far
I started my Carrer with SQS India Pune in year 2010.I never thought about testing as a career, till I learned QTP Automation.
we were fortunate to get Automation as a career eventhough we had no experience in Manual testing. It Makes feel me proud for Working on Siemens PLM application -Teamcenter.
Quick test professional Unplugged by Tarun lalwani Is the best book in market for QTP.
For manual testing, you can refer foundations of software testing, the book for ISTQB exam.
Its a good practice to subscribe to fourums (e.g QTP forum on google),where you can get many hints and learn new concepts
I have seen many of my friends getting nervous after interviews.I suggest my readers, think twice before you choose your career.Discuss with your friends & relatives, working in IT.
Never make a comparision between salary & work profile.Your friend will never know ,where your career leads to.
If you look Testing as a career,Start preparing and do your best ! There are lot of good opportunities in QA/Testing and knowledge of a test Tool is an plus.
Some people believe that Developer always get more paid than a tester, which is not entire truth. You will find high paid jobs in testing too.
